Homeland Elegies, a Novel, by Ayad Akhtar, is about being Muslim in America and being American in Pakistan. It’s about circulating in high-rent circles as an arts star and celebrity. It’s about capitalism and colonialism. And it’s especially about the author’s relationship with his father. This Pulitzer Prize-winning author has mastery over words, and though the book is denominated a “novel,” it reads like memoir and I’m guessing almost all of it is. The book is both political and personal. I highly recommend it. Here’s what The Guardian says:
