Chile has been called “a nation of poets.” Chilean Poet by novelist Alejandro Zambra, translated from the Spanish by Megan McDowell, is a playful, whimsical story that tenderly follows the lives of Gonzalo, a would-be Chilean poet, his girlfriend, Carla, and Carla’s son Vincente, who grows up to become – what else? – a Chilean poet. The story is about relationships between the characters, but it’s also about poetry generally and the subculture of Chilean poets in particular. Here’s what Kirkus Reviews says:
