The Dangers of Smoking in Bed is the title of a collection of surreal short stories by Argentinian writer Mariana Enriquez. Themes include the supernatural, death, mental illness, and, in the background, the military dictatorship in Argentina that make people “disappear.” These disturbing stories do not unfold or end the way “normal” short stories do. For me, the stories made me ponder what a short story really is. This collection was long-listed for the Booker Prize. Here’s what The Guardian says:
