Nightcrawling is the first novel and an Oprah Book Club pick by Leila Mottley, 2018 Poet Laureate of Oakland. It also was long-listed for the The Booker. The protagonist, Kiara, is a teenager drawn into prostitution in order to pay the rent to support herself, her brother, and a young boy she cares for. Her mother’s in prison, the cops abuse and exploit her (an aspect based on a true crime story). Lots of interesting characters well-portrayed and wonderful turns of phrase. I liked it.
