A Burning by Megha Majumdar is set in modern India and told through the eyes of three characters – Jivan, a girl from the slums accused of being a terrorist, Lovely a hijra (third gender) who aspires to be an actress, and PT Sir, a physical education teacher who becomes a rising star in Hindu-nationalist politics. The story alternates between funny, tragic, and poignant. It is both political and a study of the three characters. It’s extremely well-written. I highly recommend it. Here’s what Time says:
