The characters from Grisham’s first (and his favorite) novel, A Time to Kill, reappear in this follow-up about a sixteen-year-old boy who kills his mother’s abusive boyfriend (who also happens to be a deputy sheriff). There’s no doubt they boy did the killing and the community has little sympathy for a cop killer. Jake Brigance, hero of Grisham’s first novel, is appointed by the court to represent the boy. Since plot is a big part of Grisham’s books, I won’t say any more, but expect dramatic courtroom scenes, victories and reversals, and danger. I have two criticisms – the beginning of the book could have been edited down and I found the ending unsatisfying – but if you like Grisham’s lawyer novels, you’ll like this one.
