Tom Lake is where Ann Patchett’s protagonist, Lara, had a romance with Peter Duke, a fellow actor in a summer stock production of Our Town. Duke went on to become a Hollywood star and Lara went on to marry someone else and raise three girls on a cherry farm in Michigan. The plot of the novel is Lara recounting the story to her three daughters, now grown, and in the process recapitulating and reflecting upon her life. The story is romantic, sentimental and a sure bet to become a movie. Kirkus Reviews says the novel cements Patchett’s status as one of America’s finest novelists:
