Dead-End Memories is a collection of stories by Banana Yoshimoto, originally published in 2003, and translated from the Japanese by Asa Yoneda in 2022. The book jacket characterizes the stories as about women recovering from painful events. I would also characterize it as philosophical in a way that reveals the inner world of the narrators in ways beyond what each of them recognize. The author calls this collection “the most precious work of my writing career.” I often find the sensibility of Japanese fiction feels different than work originally composed in other languages, almost as if it were a different kind of consciousness.
