Weaving Sundown in a Scarlet Light , by three-time U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, subtitled 50 poems for 50 years, is a collection that does what the subtitle says – begins with a poem from 1972, when she was a student at University of New Mexico, and takes us through her career and her life. I found interesting what changes and what stays the same over the course of fifty years. The history behind each poem, and how it related to her life, is set forth in notes at the end, a kind of biography bonus to go with the poems. The collection feels like a summing up of a life. There is a forward by Sandra Cisneros. The book jacket reports Harjo presently is the first Artist-in-Residence at the Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa. I highly recommend this book.
