Homie is a collection of poems by Danez Smith, a Black, Queer writer and performer, who was a finalist for the National Book Award. Smith’s pronoun is “they” and the author’s note on the title says “this book was titled homie because I don’t want non-black people to say my ***  out loud.  this book is really titled my ***.” Many of the poems are about friendships that are passionate, loves that have their own rules and understandings, and transnational bonding between peoples of color. Smith is a talented writer, mixing profane and profound with skill and spinning unexpected metaphors and images effectively. Here’s what the Star-Tribune says:
