The Best American Short Stories 2022, edited by Andrew Sean Greer, purports to be what it’s title says (with the qualification that stories are selected from both American and Canadian magazines). Most of the stories in this collection, all from publications with the best reputations and well-written, are whimsically surrealistic, dystopic, and tend toward inconclusive endings. However, the two stories I really loved, Lauren Groff’s “The Wind” and Erin Somer’s “The Ten-Year Affair,” didn’t share those characteristics. There are extensive notes from the contributors at the end concerning the origin and creation of their respective stories that are extremely interesting, especially if you’re a writer.
