The novel We Were Never Here, by Andrea Bartz, begins with an atmosphere of anxiety. The protagonist, Emily, is on vacation with Kristen, her BFF, in Chile. We learn part of the reason for the anxiety is the last time Emily took a vacation with Kristen (in Cambodia) Emily was traumatized by a sexual assault. But as events unfold in Chile, we learn more secrets – that Kristen killed the perpetrator in Cambodia to save Emily and Emily helped Kristen dispose of the body, a secret that ties them together. Then something similar happens in Chile. The anxiety amps up as authorities investigate the death in Chile and Emily begins to realize that her BFF is a sociopath.
