The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris is clever social commentary about racism in the literary world. The protagonist, editorial assistant Nella Rogers, is the only Black employee at New York City publisher Wagner Books. Then Hazel, the cool Black girl from Harlem, is hired. Nella thinks she has a friend and ally. However, Hazel is not what she appears to be. To reveal more would undermine the experience, as the discovery and unraveling of the plot is one key to the enjoyment of the story. The novel is clever and has a lot to say about racism, code-switching, and the literary world. Here’s what Kirkus Reviews says:
