The Furrows is Namwali Serpell’s story of grief told from the point of view of Cee, the older sister of Wayne, who died mysteriously when they were children. The prose is absolutely brilliant but, in my opinion, not expressed in reviews of the book by the powers that be, the switch in point of view in the second half of the book and the character thereby created, while vivid and real, seems to a contrived intersection with Cee’s grief fantasies. Nonetheless, the prose is so good it will carry you along with it. If you’re a writer, you have to read this book and study the author’s skils. Here’s what The Atlantic says:
