Eileen Garvin is a writer and beekeeper in Oregon, where her debut novel The Music of Bees is set. The protagonists are Alice, a widow and beekeeper, Harry, a good-hearted twenty-year-old lost ball in tall grass, and Jake, an eighteen-year-old paraplegic. All of them need hope. Fate brings them together into an ad hoc family at Alice’s farm in Oregon orchard country, where an evil pesticide company is corrupting the small town government where Alice works and killing the bees. Long story short, obstacles are overcome, good triumphs over evil, and the protagonists heal and grow into new and fulfilling lives. Each chapter begins with an excerpt from a book about bees that analogizes to the what’s happening with the humans in their little colony at Alice’s farm.
